Objectives
This is a 2 hour hands-on ultrasound workshop offered to physicians who wish to learn point- of-care ultrasonography of the stomach to perform perioperative assessment of aspiration risk. The workshop includes a 1 hour lecture with live model scanning and ample time for questions and answers. This is followed by a
1 hour hands-on scanning practice session on live models.
Objectives
At the end of this introductory course, participants should be able to:
Perform a bedside gastric ultrasound examination.
Identify the common sonographic appearance of a stomach that is empty, contains clear fluid, thick fluid or solid contents.
Estimate total gastric volume, based on the antral cross-sectional area.
Interpret the findings of this examination and discuss how different findings would affect patient care.
Name 2-3 common clinical scenarios in which point-of-care gastric ultrasound could help guide anesthetic management.
